HANNIBAL - Earlier this week, the Elkhorn Creek Bridge on MO 161 near Buell was closed following a safety inspection. Barricades have been place on either side of the bridge, and no vehicles are allowed on the bridge.
"Motorists are still trying to use the bridge by moving or driving around the barricades on MO 161," said MoDOT District Engineer Paula Gough. "I cannot emphasize enough the importance of staying off the bridge," she stated. "The bridge has been monitored regularly over the last several years, and while it visibly shows its 85 years of age, up until recently, it has been deemed safe to cross," Gough added.
A detour is currently in place on MO 161 near Middletown for an existing bridge project over Coon Creek. Even though this project will soon be completed, the detour will remain in place due to the closure of the bridge over Elkhorn Creek. MO 161 will remained closed from Route V to CC for the bridge closure at Elkhorn Creek located north of Buell.
"The Elkhorn Creek Bridge will be closed for an indefinite amount of time as there is no funding allocated for fixing this bridge, and there are no immediate plans to repair or replace this bridge," said Gough . "This bridge will remain closed for a significant amount of time," she added.
