The City of Kearney continues to grow and thrive, creating the need to provide safety and capacity improvements along Route 92. The current two-lane roadway allows no storage for left turns, causing traffic congestion on Route 92.
How will the project benefit me?
The proposed solution will widen the road to four lanes with turn lanes, creating a 5-lane section of roadway from just east of I-35 to Sam Barr Road. This will minimize congestion and enhance safety along this busy roadway. A designated lane for turns allow vehicles to safely pull out of the driving lanes to make a turn while through traffic continues to move along Route 92.
Improvements also include building an additional westbound lane underneath the bridge at I-35. Sidewalks will be added along the south side of Route 92. In addition, sections along Route 92 between Sam Barr Road and Nation Road will receive intersection improvements, removing hills to improve sight distance, incorporating roundabouts to improve safety.
What is the time line of this project?
Work is currently under way. Widening of Route 92 begins near the I-35 bridge. Once school is dismissed for summer, by the end of May, crews will shut down Route 92 between Sam Barr Road and Nation Road to begin intersection and safety improvements. A signed detour will be in place. This portion of Route 92 will reopen by mid-August.
All work will be done by the end of 2013.
