Project Status: Project complete and open to traffice

Why is MoDOT doing this project?

Built in 1963, The Main Street/Buckner Tarnsey interchange no longer fits the growing population of Grain Valley. Delays, congestions, and back-ups are becoming common place for those living, working and traveling to the city.

Past MoDOT studies have shown improvements are needed at this interchange. Interchange improvements will not only address vehicular congestion and the ramps to I-70, but also promote alternative forms of transportation such as pedestrian connectivity and cycling.

How will this project benefit me?

A newly configured interchange will better serve the public and create a more aesthetically pleasing downtown with a positive sense of community.

MoDOT and TranSystems produced a traffic study outlining the vehicular flows and safety enhancements, and determined the best locations of ramps,  lanes and drives and proposed the following:

  • Relocate US 40 and Main Street / Buckner Tarsney intersection approximately 400 feet south of the current location.
  • Promote alternative forms of transportation, such as pedestrian access and cycling.
  • Improve the existing interchange with lanes added behind the columns of the existing bridge and additional turn lanes to the I-70 off-ramps to reduce backups.
  • Relocate the north outer roads approximately 600 feet north of the current location to increase separation from the traffic signal at the I-70 northern ramps.
  • Extending the acceleration/deceleration lanes on I-70 to allow for better merging on and off I-70.

What is the project time line?

The interchange project will be constructed in phases with some phases overlapping others. The first phase began July 9, 2012.  Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Not all phases of the project will begin at the same time, construction for utilities, drainage, and grading may occur in multiple locations at once.

How is this project funded?

This is a cost share project with MoDOT and the City of Grain Valley.
